Welcome to the JCC Aquatics Center and David Zimerman pool! To ensure the safety and enjoyment for swimmers and staff, all aquatics program participants must adhere to our rules and behavior guidelines. All swimmers must follow lifeguards’ instructions at all times. Anyone who fails to comply with the following may be asked to leave the premises. The JCC’s pools may be closed at any time during normal hours of operation due to safety, health, and sanitation.

Suspended pool privileges may be restored at the discretion of the JCC Executive Director and Aquatic Director.
Weather:
- Thunder/Lightening: All JCC pools will close in the event there is thunder or lightening. The JCC adheres to the National Lightning Safety Institute’s advised safety procedures. Swimmers will be required to clear the pool for 30 minutes after each thunderclap, and will be required to clear the pool deck for 30 minutes after lightning is detected. It is not advised to shower during this time. The lighting policy does apply if dome is open or closed.
- Heavy Rain: If a lifeguard cannot see the bottom of the pool due to heavy rain, we will close the pool. Members may stay on the pool deck until the rain lessens and lifeguards decide it is safe to swim.
- Snow/Ice: In the event that Asheville City Schools announce a two-hour delay due to snow or ice, the JCC will automatically delay opening by two hours – 9am for aquatics. In the event that Asheville City Schools announce a closure due to snow or ice, the JCC will automatically delay opening by two hours – 9am for aquatics to enable our leadership to more accurately assess road conditions once the sun rises and determine if a full-day closure will be necessary or if we can open after the two-hour delay. We will announce by 8am whether or not the JCC will open after the automatic delay that day.
- During the summer pool season, the dome enclosure will remain open during all hours of operation, except in order to maintain scheduled swim lessons when sustained rainfall is forecasted for a significant portion of the day.
Water Contamination:
- Children aged 3 and under who are not reliably potty trained and individuals with bowel or bladder issues are required to wear a swim diaper or rubber pants. Properly fitted swim diapers must be snug around the waist and thighs. Regular diapers are not permitted in the pool, and are a drowning hazard.
- Persons with open sores or skin-related illness may not go into the JCC’s pools unless cleared by a doctor to do so.
- Please shower before entering the water. Wait 20 minutes after applying sunscreen to enter pool.
Children & Teens:
- Children under the age of 13 must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult (aged 18+).

- Green wristband: Child authorized to swim in the deep end without direct parent supervision. In swim test, child swims the length of the pool unassisted, without touching anything, and without standing up, and tread water for 30 seconds
- If a lifeguard notices signs of fatigue, anxiousness, or poor swimming in a novice swimmer and/or an increase in deep-end activity overall, they will ask novice swimmers to take a 30-minute break (or longer, depending on the number of swimmers in the pool) from the deep end
- Mermaid tails and mono-fins must only be used in the shallow end of the pool, and only by swimmers who have passed the deep-end test with a green wristband. The green deep-end wristband must be visible on the wrist of the swimmer.
Baby/Toddler Pool:
- No lifeguard is actively monitoring the Baby/Toddler Pool. Children in the Baby/Toddler Pool must be actively supervised by an adult at all times. Parents/guardians are responsible for the safety of their children in the Baby/Toddler Pool area.

- Adjustments of the diving board fulcrum may be made only at the discretion of the aquatic staff
- No scuba- or snorkling-style goggles/face masks are allowed while jumping from the diving board
- Individuals may be banned from the diving board if they continually violate the diving board rules or do not follow a safety restriction imposed by a lifeguard (e.g., a lifeguard may prohibit a diver from doing a back flip if the diver repeatedly comes too close to the diving board).

Lessons:
- Be prepared for lessons to begin:
- Arrive five minutes prior to the start time of your class.
- Students should come prepared with long hair pulled back
- Students can bring goggles from home, borrow goggles from the aquatics program, or purchase goggles at the front desk
- Do not allow children to enter the water until the instructor is ready
- Parents and caregivers must sit to the side of the pool and not behind the students to avoid distractions to children and instructors
- Be prepared to promptly receive your child at the end of lessons
- Only one parent is allowed to be with the student in the water for Parent/Baby and Parent/Toddler classes
- If there is no recreational swim happening in other parts of the pool, siblings and parents cannot swim during the lesson
- Cancellations:
- If the JCC has to unexpectedly cancel swim lessons, families will be informed via email and the JCC will make every attempt to schedule a make-up class
- If a family has to unexpectedly miss a swim lesson, the lesson will not be refunded or made up at a future date or by moving in and out of classes
Lap Swimming:
- Be considerate and share lanes, including circle swimming when needed.
- Splitting / lane sharing with one other person: If two swimmers need to share a lane, swimmers should split the lane
- If you arrive and there is one other person in the lane already, sit on the pool edge and dangle your legs in the water to announce your presence
- Please stay on your designated side of the lane
- Circle swimming / lane sharing with two other people: If three swimmers need to share a lane, swimmers in the lane must circle swim
- If you arrive and there are two people in the lane already, wait for them to stop swimming and ask them to circle swim. All members in the lane must be made aware that this change is happening and which direction swimmers will be going
- It is easier to circle swim if all swimmers in the lane are close to the same speed
- Slower swimmers must yield to faster swimmers. Consider the faster swimmer who is at your feet and offer them to go ahead when you reach the wall, or let them pass you
- Pass on the left. Tap the foot of the person in front of you before passing
- If you need to stop, continue swimming until you get to the wall and squeeze into the right corner
- Never push off the wall when another swimmer is approaching the wall to turn
- If you are already swimming and see someone waiting to join your lane, stop and acknowledge the other swimmer, and agree upon a side (if there will be two swimmers in the lane) or a direction for circle swimming (if there will be three or more swimmers in the lane)
- Splitting / lane sharing with one other person: If two swimmers need to share a lane, swimmers should split the lane
- Lifeguards may ask you to switch lanes. Please accommodate their requests
Attachment A: Asheville JCC Locker Room / Restroom Policy
Whereas there are appropriate instances when a member or guest may require usage of a locker room and/or restroom that is not labeled for their gender identity, the following policy is designed to both protect their rights, their safety, and to provide guidelines for staff response.
· Young children (aged 5 years old and under) are permitted to enter a locker room/restroom with their caregiver- regardless as to whether the child’s sex or gender is the same as the caregivers- in order to ensure appropriate personal care and supervision.
· Individuals with physical, intellectual and/or developmental limitations who require a personal caregiver, are permitted to enter a locker room/restroom with their caregiver of the opposite sex or gender.
· Transgender individuals should use the locker room/restroom of their choosing
In all cases, locker room/restroom facilities will be maintained by the Asheville JCC in an effort to provide private areas for individuals to use and to maintain respect for others’ privacy, including a private family restroom/locker room.
Attachment B: Asheville JCC Food Policy
Year-Round Policy All Asheville JCC kitchens and facilities are vegetarian/pescatarian. Food brought into, through, stored in, and consumed in JCC facilities by staff, members, visitors, and renters, must be vegetarian/pescatarian (see below). This includes deliveries, groceries, and homemade foods.
This policy applies to all JCC facilities and properties with the following two exceptions:
· Hilde’s House
· The main courtyard at the front of the main building (236 Charlotte Street)
Allowable (examples) · Produce (fruits and vegetables) · Plant-based proteins · Grains · Fish with scales and fins (ex: tuna, salmon, trout) · Eggs · Dairy
Not Allowable (examples) · Animal proteins (ex: beef, pork, lamb) · Poultry (ex: chicken, turkey) · Seafood without scales or fins (ex: clams, octopus, shrimp, lobster, catfish, shark)
While vegetarian/pescatarian guidelines are required on-site, the JCC recommends but does not require these guidelines for off-campus programs, events and field trips.
Passover Policy
During Passover (beginning at sundown on Erev Pesach and lasting the following seven days), staff, members, visitors, and renters may not bring foods containing leavening into JCC facilities. Kitniyot (legumes) are permitted. Kitchens (catering, upstairs staff, teachers’, and lifeguards’) will be cleaned during the week prior to Passover and leavened products will be removed or boxed and stored separately.
Additional Context The JCC’s food policy is driven and supported by the Jewish value of Hachnasat orchim – hospitality. At the Asheville JCC, all are welcome to share in Jewish traditions, values, and culture, which are observed in a variety of ways by JCC community members. This policy adapts to a parve (dairy/vegetarian) diet so that people with a broad range of Jewish cultural expressions can eat at the JCC, there is consistency with all JCC spaces under the same guidelines, the large/catering kitchen is accessible to all staff and programs, and kashering (making a space kosher) is simplified for special needs and events.
These guidelines have been determined through extensive conversations with the JCC Board of Directors, rabbis, JCC staff, and in consultation with JCCA and other JCCs nationwide. All staff will receive training in the food policies of the JCC.
