The many groups who gather for Shabbat with the JCC illustrate a variety of ways to celebrate Jewish culture. From the preschoolers at Shalom Children‘s Center to the elders at Welcome Shabbat, we mark Shabbat in both customary and innovative ways.
Our members’ full Shabbat stories:
Lap swimmer Len Levi:
“After a lifetime of aborted attempts at a more fit lifestyle, I have finally found a sustainable regiment that includes swimming laps at the Asheville JCC 3-4 times a week. The beautiful facility allows me to enjoy a low-impact cardiovascular work-out while also welcoming the rising sun (even in the winter!). The addition of a masters class on Fridays keeps things fresh with variety and instruction from an endurance triathlete (Coach Caroline). I top it off with the convenience of bringing home a fresh Challah to be enjoyed by my family (okay, so maybe I have a little bit too). There is no better way for me to start the day than in the magic waters of the JCC pool.“
Brunch B’Yachad member Sharon Kaufman:
“When my husband and I moved to Asheville from New York City four years ago, we had no idea there was such a vibrant (and growing) Jewish community. I was delighted to learn there was a JCC and joined immediately – but this was at the height of the COVID pandemic, so nothing much was happening. When things opened up and a friend suggested I come to Brunch B’yachad – well, what a delight! Geri’s enthusiasm, warmth, knowledge and creativity give Friday mornings a place to gather with new and (now) older friends. We talk, we schmooze, we eat great bagels, and focus on a topic that she has chosen for us. I think of us as a family that always welcomes new members. I treasure these times together.“
