On Tuesday, April 2, at 1 pm, in Raleigh at the Legislative Office Building in room 643, the House Education Committee will hold a hearing regarding the Holocaust Education Bill. The bill would act to integrate education on the Holocaust and genocide into the standard course of study. This historic piece of legislation is believed to be the only bill ever introduced in the General Assembly to require that the Holocaust be added to the state’s curriculum for public schools.
The bill would require theState Board of Education to review NC middle school and high school standard course of study and, in consultation and coordination with the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching integrate into English, social studies courses, and other courses as appropriate, education on the Holocaust and genocide and develop a curriculum for a Holocaust Studies elective that may be offered in middle schools and high schools. Additionally, the bill would require the Department of Public Instruction to provide professional development to ensure that the intent and provisions of Holocaust education are effectively implemented.
