Have you been looking for a meaningful way to spend some of your free time? We can help you, help others.
The JCC Mitzvah Corps is a volunteer program that promotes service as an important and unifying feature of Jewish life and communal culture. This team of advocates, ages 50 and beyond, meets regularly to learn about and discuss issues and needs in our community and explores how to apply Jewish values to addressing these areas of concern. Mitzvah Corps participants volunteer with the JCC, as well as other Jewish and non-Jewish agencies in the Asheville area. Volunteers contribute their time, skills and experience, while developing relationships with people from different age, cultural, and socio-economic groups. The Mitzvah Corps is funded in part by a grant from BJH Foundation for Senior Services.
This program is individually designed to meet your needs as a volunteer first and then, match up your needs to fill a community need. Currently, we are seeking volunteers for the following programs:
- Visiting homebound seniors. We have partnered with Jewish Family Services on their Friendly Visitor program. Volunteers will be provided with training and then matched up with a homebound senior. We are looking for volunteers willing to commit to visiting at least twice a month.
- Preparing meals for community members who are temporarily homebound due to illness or surgery. If you volunteer for this program, you will be notified when the need arises, and participation is not required for all meal requests.
- After-school tutors. We are looking for a weekly commitment of two hours of time to work with the after-school kids in small groups and individually.
Please contact JCC volunteer coordinator Jessica Whitehill at Jessica@jccavldev.wpengine.com or 253-0701 ext. 140 to volunteer for these programs or for more information about the Mitzvah Corps.
