The Instructor:
James Sokol started in the opera world under the leadership of Beverly Sills at New York City Opera. After working on projects with the Opera Company of Philadelphia while in graduate school, Sokol moved west to work at San Francisco Opera. He is a former Executive Director of Pocket Opera and a Founding Member of the Singers Development Foundation. He has been teaching throughout the SF Bay Area for over 25-years. He is also the Director of the Kurland Center for Adult Learning & Living at the Osher Marin JCC (San Rafael, CA).
Jewish Composers (Dec 3)
Catan, Gershwin, Halevy, Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Previn, Rubenstein, Schoenberg, Weill. Some names are quickly recognized; others totally unknown. Each is a gifted composer whose career & operatic repertoire merits discovery.
Jewish Singers – Part I (Dec 10)
Jump back to the early & mid-20th century, a period that many call “The Golden Age of Opera Singers.” (Re-)Discover some of the singers and voices that would define the era. Learn about life & career highlights and enjoy hearing their vocal artistry.
Jewish Singers – Part II (Dec 17)
Pick up where we left off (at the end of Part-I) in the mid-20th century and continue our operatic journey to celebrate those of the past as well as those still singing today.
