The Theresienstadt Series: Memory of War and Death
May 21, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A look into the history behind a grotesque and unique place within the history of the Holocaust. Some 140,000 Jews were sent to Theresienstadt, some 33,000—almost 1 in 4—died there, and about 88,000 were deported to Auschwitz where they died in the gas chambers. Some 15,000 children passed through Theresienstadt, but only 150 survived . Yet it was also where, famously and surreally, the remarkable musical, artistic and theatrical life of Czechoslovakia was permitted, defiantly, to thrive. Barbara Weitz, former professor of Czech Studies for 30 years at Florida International University, will lead you through the background and daily life of this notorious camp.
